We create art for the other, by the other, and about the other.
MISSION
We are Et Alia Theater, a company founded by and for mujeres internacionales in the cosmopolitan civitatem of New York that uplifts multicultural, women+ centered storytelling in the performing arts. Through teatru, educational opportunities, and community advocacy, we foster a supportive collettivo where our fellow estrangeiras can come as they are. If our visa title calls us ‘extraordinary aliens’, Et Alia is here to celebrate such extraordinariness by hiring, featuring, and endorsing this 'othered' community, thus making a place for the 'out of place'.
CORE VALUES
MULTICULTURALIDADE (MULTICULTURALITY): We build teams that reflect NYC's diverse international community. We showcase artists with their natural accents, tradições culturais and looks, honoring their identities rather than asking them to adapt. We understand as estrangeiras (‘immigrant’, ‘international’, or ‘foreign’) anyone whose cultural background is ‘othered’ by the default United Statesian structures, with a special interest in the ones who grew up abroad and experienced immigration and cultural shocks first-hand.
RAPPRESENTAZIONE DI GENERE (GENDER REPRESENTATION): We challenge the cis-male dominance in theater by prioritizing women+ in our projects and direzione. 'Women+' encompasses cis and trans women, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming individuals, acknowledging all identities historically marginalized in teatro and beyond.
SUSȚINERE COMUNITARĂ (COMMUNITY ADVOCACY): We support our international colaboratori beyond their involvement with our projects by providing them with tools for their cariere and immigration paths as 'extraordinary aliens'.
VISION
We aim to elevar NYC's international women+ artists, celebrating their diverse cultures rather than marginalizing them. Through our programming, we challenge biases of 'americanness' vs. 'foreignness', fostering empatia and supporting our collaborators' artistic careers. By amplifying their voices, we strive for a society based in dialog and acceptance, where these artists are recognized as more 'extraordinary' and less 'aliens'.
